L\u2019artiste :<\/strong>
Andr\u00e9 LHOTE est l\u2019un des p\u00e8res fondateurs du cubisme, peintre mais aussi professeur, critique d\u2019art et th\u00e9oricien, il compte parmi les figures qui marqu\u00e8rent la vie artistique de la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du XXe si\u00e8cle. A partir de 1911, Lhote embrassa le mouvement cubiste dans une veine tr\u00e8s personnelle. Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la fin de sa vie, il conservera un lien profond avec la peinture classique, tant au niveau des sujets que dans la rigueur de ses compositions.<\/p>\n

Le contexte historique : 1914<\/strong>
Le 28 juillet 1914 d\u00e9bute la Premi\u00e8re Guerre Mondiale, Andr\u00e9 Lhote est mobilis\u00e9. Il est affect\u00e9 \u00e0 Bordeaux, sa ville natale et pr\u00e9fecture de la Gironde.<\/p>\n

L\u2019oeuvre : \u00ab Le petit-d\u00e9jeuner \u00bb<\/strong>
Il s\u2019agit ici d\u2019un sujet tr\u00e8s classique, une sc\u00e8ne d\u2019int\u00e9rieur, mais revisit\u00e9e par l\u2019artiste. La composition est parfaitement structur\u00e9e, soutenue par une palette chromatique color\u00e9e et dynamique. En jouant de nombreux contrastes opposant notamment ombre et lumi\u00e8re, Lhote traduit admirablement un moment d\u2019intimit\u00e9. La sc\u00e8ne est construite en trois plans superpos\u00e9s selon la r\u00e8gle du nombre d\u2019or.
Au centre, l\u2019artiste repr\u00e9sente sa premi\u00e8re \u00e9pouse : Marguerite, n\u00e9e Hayet, prenant le th\u00e9. Le mod\u00e8le est v\u00eatu d\u2019une tenue d\u2019int\u00e9rieur avec une charlotte. Marguerite se tient confortablement install\u00e9e dans un fauteuil Maurice devant un gu\u00e9ridon Louis Philippe.
Au premier plan \u00e0 droite, une servante debout \u00e0 la posture hi\u00e9ratique tient un plateau. Si elle para\u00eet fig\u00e9e, elle attire ind\u00e9niablement notre regard. Son \u00ab visagemasque \u00bb \u00e9voque un pan de la culture africaine dans lequel a puis\u00e9 Lhote, lui-m\u00eame grand admirateur et collectionneur de sculptures africaines. Pour \u00e9quilibrer la composition, se trouvent \u00e9galement au premier plan mais \u00e0 gauche, la verticale d\u2019une porte fen\u00eatre et la diagonale d\u2019un rideau.
Enfin, au dernier plan une large fen\u00eatre laisse entrevoir des bateaux dans le Port de Bordeaux et des drapeaux de diff\u00e9rentes nations : France, Belgique, Royaume-Uni : trois pays alli\u00e9s en guerre qui symbolisent l\u2019unit\u00e9 mais aussi, sans doute dans le contexte, une all\u00e9gorie de la lutte pour la libert\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Avec \u00ab Le Petit d\u00e9jeuner \u00bb, Andr\u00e9 Lhote fait une belle d\u00e9monstration de son style pictural unique en mettant en avant sa vision tr\u00e8s personnelle du cubisme et son talent de coloriste en utilisant un jeu audacieux de lignes, de courbes et de superpositions, un syst\u00e8me complexe de plans en interaction et d’\u00e9l\u00e9ments figuratifs g\u00e9om\u00e9triques qui conf\u00e8rent une modernit\u00e9 \u00e0 cette composition.<\/p>\n

The artist :<\/strong><\/em>
Andr\u00e9 LHOTE is one of the founding fathers of Cubism, a painter but also a teacher, art critic and theorist, he is one of the figures who marked the artistic life of the first half of the 20th century. From 1911, Lhote embraced the Cubist movement in a very personal vein. Until the end of his life, he will retain a deep connection with classical painting, both in terms of subjects and in the rigor of his compositions.<\/em><\/p>\n

The historical context : 1914<\/strong><\/em>
On July 28, 1914, the First World War began, Andr\u00e9 Lhote was mobilized. He was assigned to Bordeaux, his hometown and the Gironde prefecture.<\/em><\/p>\n

The work : \u00ab Le petit-d\u00e9jeuner \u00bb (\u00ab Breakfast \u00bb)<\/strong><\/em>
This is a very classic subject, an interior scene, but revisited by the artist. The composition is perfectly structured, supported by a colorful and dynamic chromatic palette. By playing on numerous contrasts, notably between light and shadow, Lhote admirably conveys a moment of intimacy. The scene is built in three superimposed planes according to the rule of the \u00ab golden ratio \u00bb.<\/em>
In the center, the artist represents his first wife : Marguerite, born Hayet, having tea. The model is dressed in an indoor outfit with a charlotte. Marguerite is comfortably installed in a Maurice armchair in front of a Louis Philippe pedestal table.<\/em>
In the foreground on the right, a servant standing in a hieratic posture holds a tray. If it seems frozen, it definitely catches our eye. Her \u201cface-mask\u201d evokes a part of African culture from which Lhote, himself a great admirer and collector of African sculptures, has drawn. To balance the composition, there are also in the foreground but on the left, the vertical of a French window and the diagonal of a curtain.<\/em>
Finally, in the background a large window lets glimpse boats in the Port of Bordeaux and flags of different nations: France, Belgium, United Kingdom: three allied countries at war which symbolize unity but also, undoubtedly in the context , an allegory of the struggle for freedom.<\/em><\/p>\n

With \u00ab\u00a0Le petit d\u00e9jeuner\u00a0\u00bb, Andr\u00e9 Lhote makes a beautiful demonstration of his unique pictorial style by highlighting his very personal vision of cubism and his talent as a colorist by using a daring play of lines, curves and overlays, a complex system. of interacting plans and geometric figurative elements that give this composition a modernity.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
