Stylistically there are resemblances with the series of Saint George and<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

the Dragon. Our warrior is depicted in the same way.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The horse is made after the model of the Antique equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in the Campidoglio in Rome where it was moved in 1538\u00a0; this is the unique equestrian sculpture from Antique Rome which has been preserved.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Born in Florence in 1577, Fanelli moved to Genoa by 1605 and worked<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

there until at least 1630. In 1634 he received a court pension from King Charles I<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

in London, where he had probably been working since 1632. His sons Virgilio,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Pietro, and Giovanni Battista were born in Genoa prior to his departure, and they<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

all became important sculptors who would eventually set up and run workshops as<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

far afield as England, Italy and Spain, often continuing to cast bronzes from the<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

models created by their father. Fanelli was highly regarded by the principal art<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

patrons of Genoa and was almost certainly acquainted with Anthony Van Dyck<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

before that painter relocated to London. Indeed it is believed that Van Dyck or his<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

contacts may have been instrumental in bringing Fanelli to the attention of King<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Charles I.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Fanelli stayed in England until at least 1641 where he was highly<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

celebrated, only reappearing in Genoa in 1657. After that date, there are only<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

short but laudatory records of him, including one in which he is described as \u2018the<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Actif en Angleterre de 1610 \u00e0 1642, eut les faveurs de Charles Ier, puis re\u00e7ut le titre de sculpteur du roi d\u2019Angleterre. Retourne ensuite en Italie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ce bronze a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9serv\u00e9 dans sa patine d\u2019origine qui est remarquable.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stylistiquement, on observe des ressemblances entre le cavalier pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 et celui du groupe de Saint George et le dragon. (collection Victoria an dAlbert Museum).<\/span><\/p>\n

Le cheval quant \u00e0 lui est inspir\u00e9 de la statue \u00e9questre de Marc Aur\u00e8le install\u00e9e au Campidoglio, sur la colline du Capitole \u00e0 Rome, o\u00f9 il a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9plac\u00e9 en 1538. Cette statue est la seule statue equestre de la Rome Antique qui soit parvenue jusqu\u2019\u00e0 nous.<\/span><\/p>\n

N\u00e9 \u00e0 Florence en 1577, Fanelli a d\u00e9m\u00e9nag\u00e9 \u00e0 G\u00eanes en 1605 o\u00f9 il a travaill\u00e9 jusqu’en 1630.<\/span><\/p>\n

En 1634, il re\u00e7ut une pension du roi Charles Ier \u00e0 Londres, o\u00f9 il travaillait probablement depuis 1632. Fanelli \u00e9tait hautement consid\u00e9r\u00e9 par ses pairs artistes \u00e0 G\u00eanes, et il est fort probable qu\u2019il ait rencontr\u00e9 le peintre Anthony Van Dyck avant que celui-ci d\u00e9m\u00e9nage \u00e0 Londres. En effet, on croit que Van Dyck ou ses contacts peuvent avoir contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 attirer Fanelli \u00e0 l’attention du roi Charles I.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fanelli resta en Angleterre jusqu'\u00e0 au moins 1641 et y fut tr\u00e8s c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9, ne r\u00e9apparaissant \u00e0 G\u00eanes qu\u2019en 1657. <\/span><\/pre>\n
Ses fils Virgilio, Pietro et Giovanni Battista sont n\u00e9s \u00e0 G\u00eanes avant son d\u00e9part pour Londres.
