Cette Vierge en Majest\u00e9 du XIIIe si\u00e8cle est un parfait exemple de la d\u00e9votion mariale de l\u2019\u00e9poque Romane : pas sa position hi\u00e9ratique, son buste droit, le r\u00e9alisme n\u2019est pas recherch\u00e9 par les sculpteurs qui mettent en place de nombreux codes et conventions \u00e0 valeur symbolique. Elle est dite \u00ab\u00a0Sedes Sapientiae<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, tr\u00f4ne de sagesse.<\/span><\/p>\n

Au XIIe si\u00e8cle, la d\u00e9votion mariale est essentielle. Principal intercesseur entre les hommes et Dieu, la Vierge assise sur un banc-tr\u00f4ne, est alors pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e dans une frontalit\u00e9 totale, son corps formant\u00a0le Tr\u00f4ne<\/b>\u00a0m\u00eame du Sauveur.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cette Vierge pr\u00e9sente entre ses mains l\u2019Enfant, centr\u00e9 sur ses genoux. Son visage ovale, aux yeux en amandes au regard lointain et absent, au long nez droit et \u00e0 la bouche aux l\u00e8vres fines et serr\u00e9es, est encadr\u00e9 d\u2019un voile maintenu par une couronne. Un long manteau souligne ses \u00e9paules \u00e9troites et laisse para\u00eetre la longue tunique \u00e0 col rond que Marie a rev\u00eatue.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sur ses genoux, le Christ se tient droit. La position de son bras droit permet de penser qu\u2019il levait la main en direction des fid\u00e8les, esquissant un signe de b\u00e9n\u00e9diction. Il est v\u00eatu d\u2019une tunique \u00e0 manches longues et \u00e0 l\u2019encolure arrondie sur laquelle il porte un\u00a0pallium<\/em>, v\u00eatement qui f\u00fbt port\u00e9 par les premiers chr\u00e9tiens et avec lequel le Christ \u00e9tait traditionnellement repr\u00e9sent\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le visage du Christ reprend les traits de sa m\u00e8re, comme il \u00e9tait alors d\u2019usage. Cela exprime le caract\u00e8re divin et transcendant du Christ, tandis que Marie n\u2019est que \u00ab le passage \u00bb du Dieu fait Homme.<\/span><\/p>\n

Par son caract\u00e8re aust\u00e8re et son visage emprunt d\u2019une grande s\u00e9renit\u00e9, cette importante Vierge, Tr\u00f4ne de Sagesse, se tourne vers les fid\u00e8les et transmet toute sa puissance. L\u2019attitude solennelle de la Vierge traduit \u00e9galement cette pens\u00e9e de Saint Jean Damasc\u00e8ne :\u00a0<\/span>\u00ab\u00a0Ses mains porteront l\u2019Eternel et ses genoux seront un tr\u00f4ne\u2026<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Cette sculpture a conserv\u00e9 quelques traces de polychromie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cette Vierge \u00e0 l\u2019Enfant en Majest\u00e9 peut \u00eatre compar\u00e9e \u00e0 deux \u0153uvres bourguignonnes, la Vierge en Majest\u00e9 provenant de Nolay ainsi que celle d\u2019Arnay-le-Duc, toutes deux conserv\u00e9es dans les collections du mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts de Beaune, ci apr\u00e8s.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This Virgin and Child Enthroned from the 13th century is a perfect example of Marian devotion during the Romanesque period with her hieratic position and straight bust. Realism was not something sculptors wanted to achieve, they favoured symbolic conventions and codes instead. We call her\u00a0Sedes Sapientae<\/em>\u00a0meaning throne of wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Marian devotion is an essential part of the 12th century. Main intercessor between humans and God, the Virgin seats on a throne-bench. Her body adopts a strict frontality and becomes the throne itself for the Savior to seat on.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Virgin holds in her hands the Child centred on her knees. Her oval face with almond-shaped eyes and distant gaze, straight nose and small lips, is framed by the veil secured with a crown. A long cloak covers the narrow shoulders of Mary and reveals the round collar tunic she wears beneath.<\/span><\/p>\n

On her knees Christ stands straight. The position of His right arm suggests He was raising His hand, blessing the worshippers. He is dressed with a long-sleeved round collar tunic over which is worn a\u00a0pallium<\/em>, a piece of clothing worn by the first Christians and traditionaly associated with the iconography of Christ. As expected, Christ\u2019s face resembles his mother\u2019s. It is a way to express the divine and transcendental dimension of Christ while Mary is only the passage of God made man.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With its severe appearance and serene face this important\u00a0Sedes Sapientae<\/em>\u00a0Virgin turns to the worshippers and give them all her strength. The Virgin\u2019s solemn attitude is a physical translatation of John of Damascus\u2019 reflexion\u00a0:\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0Her hands will cary the Eternal and her knees will be a throne<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n

This sculpture still presents some traces of polychromy.<\/span><\/p>\n

This Virgin and Child Enthroned can be compared with two Burgundian works. The Virgin and Child Enthroned from Nolay as well as the one from Arnay-Le-Duc both kept in the Fine Arts Museum of Beaune and presented in the following pictures.<\/span><\/p>\n
