Cette magnifique majolique histori\u00e9e dat\u00e9e de 1550-1570, provient d’Urbino en Italie, probablement issue de l’atelier de Fontana.<\/span>
La sc\u00e8ne peinte montre Neptune enla\u00e7ant la nymphe C\u00e9nis, sur un rivage. V\u00eatu d’un turban vert et d’un drap\u00e9 mangan\u00e8se, le dieu laisse tomber son trident noir, pos\u00e9 \u00e0 ses pieds. La nymphe porte une robe ocre gonfl\u00e9e. La pr\u00e9sence de Cupidon, ail\u00e9 et troquant son arc pour un trident, appuie le caract\u00e8re amoureux de la sc\u00e8ne. Plac\u00e9s dans la mer, trois hippocampes constituent le char de Neptune, sorti des eaux. Le paysage est form\u00e9 par un rocher massif s\u00e9parant en deux l’arri\u00e8re-plan, avec les bateaux d’un c\u00f4t\u00e9 et une \u00eele abritant des b\u00e2timents et des montagnes de l’autre.<\/span>
Cette composition est tir\u00e9e d’une gravure de Virgil Solis, intitul\u00e9e C\u00e9nis et Pos\u00e9idon, illustrant l’\u00e9dition de 1563 des M\u00e9tamorphoses d’Ovide. La production de l’atelier du c\u00e9ramiste Orazio Fontana (1510-1571) se caract\u00e9rise surtout par l’attention donn\u00e9e aux\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>paysages qui constituent la toile de fond des majoliques histori\u00e9es. Les rochers sont stylis\u00e9s, les tons bleus, utilis\u00e9s pour le ciel et l’eau, contrastent avec les tons rouge-orang\u00e9s et le teint ambr\u00e9 des personnages.<\/span>

Sur l’arri\u00e8re de la c\u00e9ramique se trouve plusieurs inscriptions : Netuno, \u00e9crit au centre, en bleu; une note descriptive r\u00e9dig\u00e9e en allemand, datant et identifiant le plan comme issu de l’atelier d’Orazio Fontana; et enfin une seconde note descriptive fragmentaire r\u00e9dig\u00e9e en anglais.<\/span>
Production d’une qualit\u00e9 exceptionnelle, l’oeuvre \u00e9tonne \u00e0 la fois par les couleurs vives qui composent la sc\u00e8ne, et par la sensation de mouvement intense, rendue par les drap\u00e9s volants, par le mouvement chaotique de l’eau, et par la pose du dieu de l’Oc\u00e9an, courant pour aller embrasser la nymphe.<\/span><\/p>\n

This magnificent historiated majolica, dated 1550-1570, comes from Urbino, Italy, probably from Fontana’s workshop.<\/span><\/em>
The painted scene shows Neptune embracing the nymph Cenis, on a shore. Dressed in a green turban and manganese drape, the god drops his black trident at his feet. The nymph wears a puffy ochre dress. The presence of Cupid, winged and swapping his bow for a trident, emphasizes the amorous nature of the scene. Three seahorses in the sea form Neptune’s chariot, rising from the waters. The landscape is formed by a massive rock dividing the background in two, with boats on one side and an island of buildings and mountains on the other.<\/span><\/em>
This composition is taken from an engraving by Virgil Solis, entitled C\u00e9nis et Pos\u00e9idon, illustrating the 1563 edition of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The output of the workshop of ceramist Orazio Fontana (1510-1571) is characterized above all by the attention paid to the landscapes that form the backdrop to his historiated majolica. The rocks are stylized, and the blue tones used for the sky and water contrast with the orange-red tones and amber complexion of the figures.<\/span><\/em>
On the back of the ceramics are several inscriptions: Netuno, written in the center, in blue; a descriptive note written in German, dating and identifying the plan as coming from the workshop of Orazio Fontana; and finally a second fragmentary descriptive note written in English.<\/span><\/em>
A production of exceptional quality, the work astonishes both by the vivid colors that make up the scene, and by the sensation of intense movement, rendered by the flying draperies, the chaotic movement of the water, and the pose of the Ocean god, running to embrace the nymph.<\/span><\/em>
