Louis XIV inkwell in Boulle marquetry with coat of arms<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n
Dimensions: H 10.5 cm x W 35 cm x D 20 cm<\/strong><\/p>\n Desk inkwell in Boulle marquetry, red tortoiseshell and engraved brass on a pewter background. <\/p>\n All sides are decorated with marquetry inspired by the floral and animal collection. \u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200bAt the back are three birds in red tortoiseshell, their wings outstretched and seeming to sing. They rest on scrolls and branches harmoniously wound in finely engraved brass.<\/p>\n The front fa\u00e7ade,\u00a0supported on either side by square legs in concave parallel vertical walls, is depicted with a crowned coat of arms surrounded by winged putti holding bunches of grapes and facing serpents. The body of the puttis forms scrolls coiled and intertwined in snakes. <\/p>\n This figuration is characterized by the contrast of colors. The coat of arms on a tortoiseshell background highlights the red of the bunches of grapes and the snakes. The interior shapes of the coat of arms, the crown, the puttis and the scrolls are finely engraved in the brass, which particularly stands out the red tortoise shell from this light yellow copper color.<\/p>\n This coat of arms surmounted by a marquis crown bears a gold chevron and in chief of a double pendant in the same color. <\/p>\n The intermediate part, allowing the pen to be placed, has a large concave-shaped reserve depicting a canine versus feline scene. By their bright red color we particularly distinguish this scene, we can however notice in engraved brass that a woman holds the dog by the collar, her bust entirely extended over the animal and the lower part of her body transforming into scrolls like the putti in front. <\/p>\n This scene is framed by finely engraved brass scrolls and is finished in the upper part by an ogee profile surmounted in the upper part by a rectangular surface over the entire length. <\/p>\n There are two square areas raised by a few millimeters on the sides, presenting compartments for ink and drying sand and a rectangular area in the center, forming a sponge compartment. Our inkwell stands out due to its particularly curved shape, unlike the inkwells of the time whose line is mainly rectangular, and due to its animal lexicon. <\/p>\n These particularities and the fine marquetry work make it a rare and precious piece. Ils reposent sur des rinceaux et branchages harmonieusement enroul\u00e9s en laiton finement grav\u00e9.<\/p>\n La fa\u00e7ade avant,\u00a0soutenue de part et d’autre par des pieds carr\u00e9s en parois verticales parall\u00e8les concaves, est figur\u00e9e d’un blason couronn\u00e9 entour\u00e9 de putti aill\u00e9s tenant des grappes de raisin et faisant face \u00e0 des serpents. Le corps des puttis forme rinceaux enroul\u00e9s et entrem\u00eal\u00e9s dans les serpents. <\/p>\n Cette figuration se caract\u00e9rise par le contraste des couleurs. Le blason sur fond d\u2019\u00e9caille de tortue souligne le rouge des grappes de raisins et des serpents. Les formes int\u00e9rieures du blason, la couronne, les puttis et les rinceaux sont finement grav\u00e9s dans le laiton ce qui d\u00e9tache particuli\u00e8rement l\u2019\u00e9caille de tortue rouge de cette couleur claire de cuivre jaune.<\/p>\n Ce blason surmont\u00e9 d\u2019une couronne de marquis porte de gueule au chevron d\u2019or en chef d\u2019un lambel \u00e0 deux pendant de m\u00eame. <\/p>\n La partie interm\u00e9diaire, permettant de poser la plume, pr\u00e9sente une grande r\u00e9serve de forme concave figurant une sc\u00e8ne canin contre f\u00e9lin. Par leur couleur rouge vif on distingue particuli\u00e8rement cette sc\u00e8ne, nous pouvons cependant remarquer en laiton grav\u00e9 qu\u2019une femme retient le chien par le col, son buste enti\u00e8rement \u00e9tendu sur l\u2019animal et le bas de son corps se transformant en rinceaux tels les putti en fa\u00e7ade. <\/p>\n Cette sc\u00e8ne est encadr\u00e9e de rinceaux en laiton finement grav\u00e9 et se fini dans la partie sup\u00e9rieure par un profil \u00e0 doucine surmont\u00e9 dans la partie haute d\u2019une surface rectangulaire sur toute la longueur. <\/p>\n On y distingue deux zones carr\u00e9es rehauss\u00e9es de quelques millim\u00e8tres sur les c\u00f4t\u00e9s, pr\u00e9sentant des compartiments pour l\u2019encre et le sable \u00e0 s\u00e9chage et une zone rectangulaire au centre, formant compartiment d\u2019\u00e9ponge. Notre encrier se singularise de par sa forme particuli\u00e8rement galb\u00e9e, \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence des encriers de l\u2019\u00e9poque dont la ligne est principalement rectangulaire, et de par son lexique animalier. <\/p>\n Ces particularit\u00e9s et le fin travail de marqueterie en fait une pi\u00e8ce rare et pr\u00e9cieuse. On each side, finely engraved brass scrolls form a loop, matching the shape of the object. <\/p>\n
We can discern in red tortoiseshell a feline (lion or tiger) in the left part. In the attack position, its body seems ready to pounce, its front legs raised towards its opponent. In front of him, a dog also seems ready to fight.<\/p>\n
These brass pieces are embedded in the inkwell with a pewter background and framed with lines, rolled scrolls and other foliage, in red tortoise shell.
This upper part is surrounded by an inverted cavet also in tortoiseshell. <\/p>\n
This work of art thus reflects the refinement of Louis XIV and the exceptional know-how of this period.
The central coat of arms assumes that this object was made for a marquis, which underlines the importance of this magnificent piece.<\/p>\n

Nous pouvons discerner en \u00e9caille de tortue rouge un f\u00e9lin (lion ou tigre) dans la partie gauche. En position d\u2019attaque, son corps semble pr\u00eat \u00e0 bondir, les pattes avant lev\u00e9es vers son adversaire. En face de lui, un chien semble \u00e9galement pr\u00eat au combat. <\/p>\n
Ces pi\u00e8ces en laiton sont encastr\u00e9es dans l\u2019encrier en fond d\u2019\u00e9tain et encadr\u00e9es de lignes, de rinceaux enroul\u00e9s et autres feuillages, en \u00e9cailles de tortue rouge.
Cette partie sup\u00e9rieure est ceintur\u00e9e d\u2019un cavet renvers\u00e9 \u00e9galement en \u00e9caille de tortue. <\/p>\n
Cette \u0153uvre d\u2019art refl\u00e8te ainsi le raffinement Louis XIV et le savoir faire exceptionnel de cette p\u00e9riode.
