Cet exceptionnel cadre en bois dor\u00e9 est une oeuvre de la fin XVIe si\u00e8cle. Ses figures sont sculpt\u00e9es en haut-relief dans la masse et repr\u00e9sentent les quatre saisons.<\/span>
Le th\u00e8me des quatre saisons fascine les civilisations depuis l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 tardive. Auparavant, l\u2019ann\u00e9e \u00e9tait divis\u00e9e en trois parties correspondant aux conditions climatiques des pays comme la Gr\u00e8ce ou l\u2019Egypte. Il est probable que l\u2019ann\u00e9e quadripartite soit adopt\u00e9e au moment des recherches sur le cours du soleil par les savants babyloniens et grecs. Ce calendrier solaire comporte quatre points fixes qui sont les solstices d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 et d\u2019hiver et les \u00e9quinoxes de printemps et d\u2019automne. Ces points fixes correspondent au milieu d\u2019une saison et les quatre saisons symbolisent alors les arr\u00eats du soleil dans la trajectoire circulaire de l\u2019ann\u00e9e.<\/span>
Ces quatre p\u00e9riodes divisent \u00e9galement des moments importants de la vie quotidienne des hommes, raison pour laquelle l\u2019iconographie des saisons est\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>souvent anthropomorphique. De mani\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, le printemps, l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 et l\u2019automne sont repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s par des figures f\u00e9minines tandis que l\u2019hiver a souvent une personnification plus complexe. Dans notre cadre, le printemps est associ\u00e9 aux fleurs, l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 aux \u00e9pis de bl\u00e9 et l\u2019automne \u00e0 la vigne. L\u2019hiver est quant \u00e0 lui associ\u00e9 \u00e0 la chasse avec une figure masculine accompagn\u00e9e d\u2019un chien, car cette saison est associ\u00e9e au r\u00e8gne animal.<\/span>

Dans les quatre coins du cadre sont sculpt\u00e9s des mascarons qui renvoient \u00e0 l’art grotesque. A la Renaissance, plusieurs artistes r\u00e9alisent des compositions d\u00e9coratives qui viennent imiter des d\u00e9cors antiques comme celui du Palais de N\u00e9ron, la Domus aurea. Ces d\u00e9cors comprennent des mascarons repr\u00e9sentant des figures extravagantes. A l\u2019\u00e9poque du Mani\u00e9risme, les grotesques se diffusent encore tr\u00e8s largement, et ce, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la Contre-R\u00e9forme. Les mascarons du cadre nous rappellent celui de la Fontana dello Sprone \u00e0 Florence, sculpt\u00e9 par Bernardo Buontalenti.<\/span>
Ainsi, ce cadre en bois dor\u00e9 poss\u00e8de les caract\u00e9ristiques des arts figuratifs de la Renaissance tardive avec un th\u00e8me typique de la p\u00e9riode et des motifs qui renvoie \u00e0 l\u2019art grotesque.<\/span><\/p>\n

This exceptional gilded wood frame is a work of the late 16th century. Its figures are carved in high relief in the mass and represent the four seasons.<\/span><\/em>
The theme of the four seasons has fascinated civilizations since late antiquity. Previously, the year was divided into three parts corresponding to the climatic conditions of countries such as Greece or Egypt. It is likely that the four-part year was adopted at the time of research on the course of the sun by Babylonian and Greek scholars. This solar calendar has four fixed points which are the summer and winter solstices and the spring and fall equinoxes. These fixed points correspond to the middle of a season and the four seasons then symbolize the stops of the sun in the circular trajectory of the year.<\/span><\/em>
These four periods also divide important moments of the daily life of men, reason why the life, which is why the iconography of the seasons is often anthropomorphic. Generally speaking, spring, summer and autumn are represented by female figures, while winter often has a more complex personification. In our context, spring is associated with flowers, summer with ears of wheat and autumn with vines. Winter is associated with hunting with a male figure accompanied by a dog, as this season is associated with the animal kingdom.<\/span><\/em>
In the four corners of the frame are carved masks that refer to grotesque art. During the Renaissance, several artists created decorative compositions that imitated ancient decorations such as that of Nero’s Palace, the Domus aurea. These decorations include mascarons representing extravagant figures. At the time of Mannerism, the grotesques still spread widely, and this, until the Counter-Reformation. The masks on the frame remind us of the one in the Fontana dello Sprone in Florence, sculpted by Bernardo Buontalenti.<\/span><\/em>
